Proud of our heritage

Germains, a family-owned business, was established in Los Angeles, California, in 1871 and grew rapidly to become one of the leading seed companies in the western United States. A program of diversification during the 1940s and 1950s saw the establishment of several business divisions, including rose breeding, paper products for the home and garden market, and seed pelleting and coating. The significance of the seed pelleting business extended beyond California; by the 1960s and 1970s,  establishing facilities in Europe. The business ceased to be family-owned, with the seed pelleting and coating technology eventually coming under the ownership of Associated British Foods.
