European Head of Operations

What is the purpose?

The primary purpose of this role is to lead European Operations, Planning and Supply Chain and delivering strategy, innovations, and growth at Germains.  The role requires the job holder to build rapport across all levels of the business and drive improvements and efficiency across all sites individually and as a group, including via the creation of relevant performance metrics and a culture of business improvement across all sites.

The role will maintain and develop further on the culture of empowerment and autonomy whilst delivering operational readiness in support of strategic and tactical R&D projects.

What will you need?

  • In addition to strong Operational experience and effective leadership capabilities candidates should have demonstrable project management skills to be used in support of strategic and tactical R&D projects.
  • Capability for collaboration across Commercial, R&D and Operational functions is desired.
  • Detailed understanding of the seed industry is advantageous.

­Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational responsibility for UK, NL and ES sites. Provide clear strategic and tactical direction to local Operations teams to identify effective working practices for mutual site benefits.
  • Responsible for H&S, Production, CI, Quality, Supply Chain and Planning; build close working relationships with customer services and supply chain teams to ensure that effective KPIs are set and achieved.
  • Lead the H&S agenda for Europe, going beyond mere compliance with legal and ABF requirements, and ensuring a culture of zero tolerance and proactive improvement in this area.
  • Oversee the European Aggregate plan based on sales forecasts to ensure demand can be serviced effectively across Europe.
  • Overall management and implementation of European procurement processes and responsible for delivery of significant cost savings through procurement initiatives.
  • Manage and improve logistics processes across the EU, ensuring compliance.
  • Work closely with the Business Unit Director and ELT to develop a robust 5 year-plan with the objective of maximising site profitability in the short, medium and long-term.
  • Work as a key member of the European Leadership Team, and to play a key part in building, devising, implementing and managing the strategy for the EU Business Unit.
  • Work closely with other departments across Europe, especially with Commercial and R&D, to build understanding between teams, develop trust and enable open collaboration.
  • Support in negotiations of annual terms with key suppliers and contractors to ensure most effective price for the business is obtained for work / activities which take place within operations.
  • Promote and maintain effective communication and working relationships with all members of the local and global Senior Management Teams, providing necessary information and insight when required.
  • Ensure all reports have appraisals and all training and development needs are identified and rectified.
  • Accountable for ensuring the effective planning, scheduling and control of employee resources in order to minimise cost but maximise profitability from each order, whilst ensuring quality and safety controls are maintained.
  • Support a Continuous Improvement culture within Operations and the wider team, encouraging change and moving the whole business to a CI mindset.
  • Lead, sponsor or support Capital Projects including identifying potential investment opportunities, developing business cases, sourcing optimal equipment, supporting governance including approvals, and ensuring commissioning within deadlines and budget.
  • Participate actively in Project Reviews to update on areas of responsibility or control.
  • Be responsible for the continuous review, update and improvement of the Business Continuity Process.
